Georgie Stone, who plays Georgie on Neighbours, has claimed that she just found out about the show’s cancellation after reading about it on Twitter.
The news that Channel 5 was cancelling Neighbours was leaked in the UK media on Saturday evening, February 5 – Sunday morning in Australia – and appeared to catch some of the cast members off guard.
The cast and crew were later informed that the media rumours were accurate and that the filming will wrap on June 10th. The cast convened a meeting to address the terrible news.
“It’s a great pity,” Georgie, who plays Mackenzie Hargreaves on Neighbours, spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about the show’s cancellation. I was in a bad mood.
“I first saw the news online – on Twitter – and had no idea if it was true or not until I got a call from one of the producers, who confirmed it.”
“Finding out you’re losing your job via social media isn’t fun.
“I was planning to depart at some point this year anyhow, but it made me sad that future generations of young actors wouldn’t have the opportunity to work on the show.”
The Neighbours team was notified in 2021 that Channel 5 had only agreed to a one-year contract renewal – far shorter than previous extensions – with an uncertain future beyond that, according to Digital Spy.
The news of Channel 5’s decision to cancel the show leaked before it could be shared with the entire cast.
“I don’t know where I’d be without it,” Georgie said, praising Neighbours. I wouldn’t have all of this fantastic information – or the love for this work – if it hadn’t been for her.
“I was also sad for the workers, who had called this home for decades, and the performers, who had called this home for decades.
“I’m simply sad for the fans, because they’ve spent so much time and effort into this wonderful show, which still has a lot of life left in it.” It’s a pity it’s coming to a close.”
The final day of production for Neighbours was last week, and the show’s conclusion is set to premiere on August 1.
Fans have praised recent UK episodes concentrating on the heartbreaking loss of Hendrix Greyson and Mackenzie’s anguish in the aftermath, praising the show for ending on a positive note.
