The new Australian thriller Riptide has been revealed by Channel 5. EastEnders’ Jo Joyner will play a lady looking into her husband’s disappearance.

Jason Herbison of Neighbours fame and Australian production companies Network 10 and Fremantle Australia collaborated to produce the four-part series, which stars Shameless actor Ciarán Griffiths and Outlander actor David Berry.

Riptide, which will be filmed in Melbourne, follows recentlywed Alison (Joyner) as she copes with her new Australian surfer husband’s abrupt disappearance.

Is there more to this man’s disappearance than first appears? Or did he get caught in a hazardous riptide? Channel 5 makes hints.

Peter O’Brien from The Unusual Suspects, Ally Fowler from Wentworth, Pia Miranda from Mustangs FC, Benny Turland from Neighbours, Asher Yasbincek from Heartbreak High, and Yazeed Dahar from Safe Harbour round out the cast of the upcoming drama.

Joyner expressed her excitement to be working with the “fantastic teams” on the show in a statement.

When it seemed like her life was finally coming together, “[Alison] is such a warm and layered character whose world is turned upside down,” she said. I’m also overjoyed to be filming in Melbourne, a gorgeous city, and the surrounding countryside, a place I’ve always wanted to visit.

Riptide, one of two shows recently commissioned by the broadcaster and Network 10, is anticipated to start filming this month in Victoria and air on Channel 5 later this year.

Prior to appearing in Mount Pleasant, Ackley Bridge, Shakespeare & Hathaway, Hang Ups, and Stay Close, Joyner was best known for her role as Tanya Branning on EastEnders from 2006 to 2018.
