The day of the surf competition has arrived, and it has thrown some Summer Bay favourites a few curveballs. While the event starts off successfully, Roo (Georgie Parker) is soon informed that one of the martials has dropped out.
Marilyn (Emily Symons) is persuaded by Roo to take up the role, and she is given the duty of bringing the candidates to the marshalling area before the heats or they will be disqualified. Marilyn has trouble gaining people’s attention until Alf (Ray Meagher) convinces her to use the loudspeaker to boost her voice.
Marilyn rapidly becomes a force to be reckoned with, bossing everyone around and generally making a ruckus, much to Roo and Alf’s amazement – and rising anger. To make matters worse, Irene receives bad news after being requested to curry favour with the gold sponsor, Gus.
Irene soon dislikes Gus as he states that he has never visited Summer Bay and that his investment is merely a tax write-off. He quickly takes a like to Irene and attempts to impress her as he digs into the free meal.
Irene is obliged to walk with Gus for the entire day, much to her dismay, as he speaks incessantly.
When Gus brings up John (Shane Withington) and tells him he’s an idiot for thinking he’d get a girl like Susie, Irene can’t hold it in any longer and has some harsh words for the gold sponsor. Is she about to lose a significant sum of money in support of the Surf Club?
