In heartbreaking Neighbours scenes, Hendrix Greyson (Ben Turland) died when his body rejected his new lungs.
As viewers are aware, the beloved character was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis earlier this year after a persistent cough caused him concern.
Despite his fears that he wouldn’t get a new pair of lungs in time, he received a phone call from the hospital informing him that they had discovered a match.
The date of the operation was revealed on Friday’s (June 10) episode of the serial drama, just days after Hendrix married Mackenzie Hargreaves, the love of his life (Georgie Stone).
Before the procedure, Hendrix said his goodbyes to his loved ones, while Mack, Karl, and Susan Kennedy (Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne) prayed for the best.
It had been a difficult night for all of Hendrix’s loved ones, but there was soon cause for celebration when Karl informed everyone that the procedure had gone flawlessly.
Mackenzie, who was overjoyed, lost no time in seeing her husband in the hospital, where she sat by his bedside. Hendrix awoke, relieved to see his wife and hopeful that the dreadful chapter was over.
However, tragedy struck soon after, when Hendrix struggled to breathe, and a closer examination by the physicians revealed that his body had rejected the new lungs, leaving him with only hours to live.
Mackenzie and Hendrix both struggled to accept the news, cradling one other in their arms and mourning a future they would never have.
Hendrix refused to be sedated, preferring to spend every last moment with his loved ones. Karl and Susan had to hold back tears as they told him how much they loved him and how he was like a son to them.
Pierce Greyson and Lisa also said their goodbyes, and Hendrix died in heartbreaking scenes with the two of them by his side, as well as Mackenzie.
Mackenzie sobbed as she climbed into bed with Hendrix, holding on to her husband for the last time.
Neighbours returns to Channel 5 on Tuesday, June 14 at 1:45 p.m. and 6 p.m.
