The Logie Awards this year will pay tribute to the cancelled series Neighbours, which will air a special final episode in August to say goodbye to fans.
According to The Herald Sun, the Australian TV awards will be held on June 19 — a week after the Ramsay Street drama will film its final-ever scenes — and will honour the beloved show’s achievements during the presentation for the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent (via The Daily Mail Australia).
The good news comes after Neighbours received no Logies nominations, while rival series Home and Away received six.
Neighbours will formally end on August 1 after Channel 5 pulled it from its schedule earlier this year, despite pleas to rescue the show and appeals for other networks to pick it up.
The series is gearing up to welcome back several famous characters, including Kylie Minogue’s Charlene Robinson, in the run-up to the finale. The music artist got her big break as the sassy mechanic, which she played from 1986 to 1988.
Last week, Minogue and her on-screen partner Jason Donovan, who plays Scott Robinson, were sighted on set in Erinsborough for their long-awaited homecoming.
Jason Herbison, the show’s executive producer and writer, spoke to Digital Spy about crafting the characters’ final bow ahead of the hour-long episode.
“It’s a great honour for me to write the final episodes and see our beloved Neighbours come to an end,” he remarked.
“I’ve always had a vision for how I’d end the play, and I’ve stuck to it, so I hope the audience enjoys it.”
